Class 1: The Basics - gradients + layers, sketching, and a simplified portrait

Learn two fundamental techniques used in this course – gradients and layering –as well as basic sketching methodology. To follow along with the full sketching exercise, you can print out the reference photo below in black and white. The print does not need to be large or of high quality, so printing 4 copies on a single page should give you the most bang for your buck. You will also need a highly pigmented drawing tool such as a watercolor pencil or an oil pastel stick. Alternatively, you can skip the printer and do the whole exercise on a device if you have access to a digital drawing program.
