Mt Tabor Plant Hunt

In 2018, I began volunteering with Post 58, fantastic organization dedicated to making outdoor trips accessible to Portland high schoolers. Most of our trips took us well outside of Portland, up into the mountains or over the Cascades. But after the pandemic hit in 2020, our travel options became extremely limited by social distancing requirements. Still, we wanted to get the antsy teens outside and doing something in nature, so I made this Plant Hunt game focused on Mt. Tabor park. Tabor is a gorgeous park on a little extinct volcano with lots of wooded windy pathways and tons of plant life, both native and invasive. The idea was to give the kids an accessible way to spend some time outside during the pandemic, with a bonus helping of plant identification practice. I and a co-lead took one group of teens on the inaugural run of this game, after which I passed the game on to the rest of the organization. I have no idea if it has been used since, but I thought I'd share it here for anyone who'd like to spend an afternoon hunting plants on Mt. Tabor or any similar park in the region.

This guide was written for mid September, but you should be able to find most of these species from late summer to mid-fall. Please feel free to download and print the file. Happy hunting!
