Portrait Demonstration - WSO Live!

Performed live in March of 2026, this Webinar stands as a basic introduction to my portraiture method. I cover the fundamentals of creating smooth gradient shapes with watercolor, then show how those gradients shapes can be layered to build out a full portrait. If you're trying to decide where to start in my Online Class Program, or you're just curious about my style, this is a great place to begin.

Materials and tools
  • Paper - Winsor & Newton 12x9" Professional 140lb Cold Press Block.
  • Paints - a limited CMYK palette of four M.Graham colors: Phthalocyanine Blue, Quinacridone Red, Nickel Quinacridone Gold, and Payne's Grey.
  • Brushes - Primarily a #0 Isabey Petit Gris squirrel mop brush, 6234. Various other brushes are mentioned.

Another hour or so of detail and refinement work was all it took to complete this portrait. If you'd like to see how I painted the background and first skin tone layer, you can watch the recording of my informal prep livestream below.
